Holiday's In The Sun Diary |
Sunday August 26th 8:00 PM - One Man Army are next and supposedly
they were using the drummer from the US Bombs since their past drummer was recently
booted from the band. For some reason the set didn't do much for me. Maybe
I was tired or maybe the floor was too sticky from 3 days of sweat, beer and
soda. The Forgotten came on and played a great set which seemed to get things
going again. Oxymoron was coming up next so I decided to hit the bathroom which
had turned into a piss filled swamp. If shoes didn't have soles I would have
been in trouble. Thank god Punks dont wear flip-flops. Coming out of the
bathroom I was the lucky recipient of a flying piece of chicken into the back of
my head. I think the chicken was meant for someone else, but its intended target
got off lucky. Pulling chicken skin from my hair I headed back in to watch
Oxymoron. The chicken was the final straw. I couldn't even enjoy the band. Once
the set was over I ran into Switchblade Mike who wondered if we could head back
to the hotel. Chauncey had hooked up with a nice looking female so I didnt expect
him to want to head back already. I told Mike it was time to go. We missed
Anti Nowhere League and Sham 69 although it ws reported to me later that Anti
Nowhere League was one of the highlights of the festival although Sham 69 didn't
seem to deliver the goods. This was from a third party source although they seemed
believable. 11:00 PM - We are back at the hotel and ran into Mick from Slaughter and the Dogs who spent 20 or 30 minutes answering our star gazed questions. Some of things he told us about his past and some of the people he was hanging with made us feel so boring. When we went into the room Switchblade Mike told me about how much beer he could consume in one setting. I think I heard 12 to 15. 12:15 AM - Switchblade Mike is now stumbling around the room after what I counted to be 5 beers. I think I heard him mumbling "Mommy" a few times before he finally was out for what I thought to be the night. 1:15 AM - Chauncey returns to the room to enjoy the last of the beer and see what is going on around the hotel. Will there be groupies, hot chicks or anything even remotely female wandering? All we find is a roadie passed out on a patio table mumbling even more than Switchblade Mike was. Finally the bands start arriving back and within minutes it begins to look like a Budweiser commercial. Room drapes are opening, doors are opening, music is being turned up and the pool chairs start to get crowded. But alas it wasn't meant to be as the Night Clerk runs everyone back to their rooms and leave Chauncey and I only one choice which was to go back to our room and fuck with Switchblade Mike. 2:30 AM - Switchblade Mike wakes up and give us his dirtiest look and then proceeds to take a piss, even though he denies it the following morning. Monday August 27th 10:10 AM - A continental breakfast turns out to be even less, maybe it should have been called a county breakfast because what little there was to choose from sucked. But how could I complain, since I had been treated to much more than a punk rock show. I had witnessed a festival and had a chance to see a hell of alot of great bands over a 72 hour span. Jim Martinez and his company First Round Promotions did a great job pulling the whole thing off. Things seemed to have went much smoother that I expected, although I wasn't the one doing the work. A special thanks to Jim Martinez, GBH, Slaughter & the Dogs, Snap-Her, The Dickies and the Kowalski's for being so cool to us. Also thanks to the sexy girl behind the desk at the Commodore Hotel for being so sexy. Will there ever be another HITS festival in the USA? Who knows, but I'm glad I was part of the first.
