Merle Haggard Release: If I Could Only Fly Label: Anti Records |

Born in a boxcar in my hometown of Bakersfield, California Merle Haggard is somewhat if a country oddity now. He isn't pretty. He doesn't appear to care what other people think about him, and he has spent time in many prisons throughout California. I can imagine him laughing at the Dixie Chicks or these little 8 year old triplets with a pound of hairspray singing about losing a tooth or eatin' mama's grub. Merle is true Country! Merle Haggard had a daughter named Kelly who I had a major crush on when I was 10 years old. She was a much older woman (14+/-) but I was determined to have her notice me. I ended up losing my nerve and leaving a chocolate/marshmellow Valentine heart under my bedroom dresser, instead of giving it to her as planned one night when my parents were going to be taking me to a school function she would be at. When my parents and I got home, we found our little Poodle named Princess with what looked like shit rubbed all over her face. My mom freaked out and finally sniffed what she thought was poop and discovered it was chocolate. Right then and there I realized it was never meant to be, since Princess had gotten the heart and Kelly never did receive my candy token of love. A song on this release called I'm Still your Daddy made me remember that story. An enjoyable listen even though I'm not too hip on Country Music. Anti Records is a division of Epitaph. Will Merle's next album be Hardcore? Grade: B Deejay O.S. |
