How Can You Help To Save The Future Of Internet Radio??? |
The survival of Internet Radio is being seriously threatened. The majority of the small Independent Net Stations would be forced to cease broadcasting if the U.S. Copyright Office accepts the reccomendations of "CARP" Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel before May 21, 2002. Somehow Internet Radio got lumped in with MP3's. MP3's allow for a perfect quality copy capable of being transferred from one to another. Interent Radio though is not a perfect copy. The broadcast streamed from the station to your computer is diluted by varuious problems including "buffereing overruns" and differing connection speeds in which each listener has to the Internet. Interent Radio is in no way a threat to the performers and recording industry, rather Internet Radio would appear to be an extremely effective way for smaller artisits to have their music played. Mass ownership of Commercial FM Radio stations and restricted playlists have resulted in a huge decline in the number of songs being played over the radio airwaves. People need to stand up now if they want Internet Radio to continue. The proposal would force Net Radio stations to pay performance rights fees to the record labels. These fees are based per song played instead of being based on the amount of revenue generated by the station Most independent Internet Radio stations including Destroy Radio make little or no money. The proposed fees would most likely exceed 100% of a small to medium sized station's gross revenue if a station was making some money. Even worse is that the fees would be retroactive to 1998 leaving Net Station Owners with huge bills that could never possibly be paid. Additional proposed reporting requirements would be technically impossible for many Net stations to complete. There is so much more to this story and so much more you can do to help.
