Deejay O.S.  -  Year End 2001  -  Top Music List
The year 2000 left a door open for me as to where we were headed musically in this new Century.
We had started the year 2001 wanting to put together a compilation CD to benefit the station but some unlucky breaks and a lack a funds has kept that project from becoming a reality.  Most of the bands that we had wanted to be on the CD were of "Punk Rock" roots. Many were unsigned, although many were 10 million fucking times better than what is played on your local commercial FM dial.
So basically I spent the year listening to an overwhelming majority of Punk Rock. Other music styles didnt seem to spark the same interest as they have in recent past years. Techno, Drum & Bass, Electronic... seemed to hibernate longer this year, but making me realize it all comes back to the Punk Rock basics which have been the main staple of my music diet since the 80's.
Interscope Records disappointed me with the release of Puddle of Mudd. Regurgitated crap which is guaranteed to suck the money out of a 12 year old's wallet. But yet Interscope also restored my faith in the big labels by ending the year with the signings of Trail of Dead from Austin, Texas and the 77 Damned style band called The Briefs from the Seattle area. Both released late year EP's with the full releases promised for this coming Spring. TSOL from Southern California were back in full swing with a new release that at first seemed average but grew on me quickly. Bands from all over the world submitted music for airplay this year and the majority rated average to excellent. Benten Records in Japan is something you should check out. Everything we received from that label sounded fresh, interesting and entertaining. Some new bands sounding Old School did a fine job rekindling a spirit which I thought had burned out many years ago. But of all things received, I was most shocked by the Gasolheads from France.       KAAAFUUUCKINGBOOOOOMMM!
Their release Sixty Seconds Swingers pushed ALL the right buttons for me. Motor punk, motor rock, motor punk rock, rock n roll punk..... The CD is short and sweet but making you want so much more. The band is supposedly working on a US deal with a very lucky label. I can only wish the best for that band and hopefully they will hold their ranking on this chart in very high Punk Rock honor.
Enjoy the list and have long discussions with your peers about the various rankings on this chart.
